This calculator is a planning aid only. Drivers and operators remain responsible for checking their tachograph records and ensuring they comply with the rules that apply to their journey and operation.

What these results cannot tell you

“OK” means only that the entered driving and daily-rest limits are not close. It is not permission to drive. The finish time is the latest start of daily rest under your chosen rest plan, not a working-time allowance.

Working-time breaks (including the six-hour rule), weekly working-time and night-work limits, weekly rest deadlines, rest compensation, earlier infringements, split daily rest, multi-manning, ferries, exemptions and temporary relaxations are not assessed. Other work may mean you need an earlier break. Check these separately before continuing.

Next-break time assumes you drive continuously from “Calculate from”. It does not include future work, traffic stops or breaks. Weekly and fortnightly results are a snapshot; recalculate after a week boundary. Missing, inconsistent or ambiguous clock-change times need correcting first.

UK DRIVERS’ HOURS RULES

A quick guide to driving, breaks and rest

Use this free HGV driving hours calculator as a quick planning check, then check the full rules for your operation.

How many hours can an HGV driver drive?

Under the standard assimilated rules, daily driving is limited to 9 hours between daily or weekly rests. You can extend this to 10 hours twice in a fixed week. Other driving and rest limits still apply.

When does an HGV driver need a break?

After no more than 4 hours 30 minutes of accumulated driving, take 45 minutes of qualifying break or start a rest period. Other work does not reset this driving clock. Working-time rules can require an earlier break.

How much daily rest does an HGV driver need?

Normally at least 11 continuous hours, completed within 24 hours of the previous daily or weekly rest ending. Where eligible, this can be reduced to 9 hours. This HGV rest calculator assumes single-manning and continuous daily rest.

What is the weekly HGV driving limit?

56 hours in a fixed week: Monday 00:00 to Sunday 24:00. Enter this week’s total including today. This is a driving limit, not a working-time allowance.

What is the fortnightly HGV driving limit?

90 hours across any two consecutive fixed weeks. We add last week’s driving to this week’s total so far. This is not an arbitrary rolling 14-day period. Check the preceding pair of weeks in your records too.

What counts as a reduced daily rest?

At least 9 but less than 11 continuous hours. You may take no more than three between two weekly rest periods, not three per calendar week. Count the previous rest if it was reduced.

Can HGV drivers drive for 10 hours?

Yes, on up to two days in a fixed week, provided all other limits allow it. Enter extensions used before today and explicitly choose a 10-hour day. A break does not increase the daily driving limit.

How do HGV driver breaks work?

Take an uninterrupted 45 minutes, or at least 15 minutes followed by at least 30 minutes, in that order. Three 15-minute breaks do not qualify. A completed qualifying break starts a new driving period. A first 15-minute split break alone does not reset driving time.

Rules checked 3 October 2026 against DVSA’s official goods vehicle guidance. Read the separate working-time rules.
